US cryptocurrency holders face a tax deadline on October 15

According to CoinMeta, U.S. cryptocurrency taxpayers face a final tax deadline on October 15th. According to the regulations of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS), taxpayers who requested a six-month automatic extension must submit their 2025 federal income tax returns by October 15, 2026. While the extension provides more time to submit the documents, it does not mean that the payment of unpaid taxes can be postponed. For crypto users, this deadline coincides with the season when many investors receive their first 1099-MISC forms covering digital asset transactions. The 1099-MISC form requires brokers involved to report the total income from qualified sales in 2025, whereas most 1099-K forms do not include information on the cost base. Taxpayers need to determine the original purchase amount of the assets sold on their own.
