South Korea suspends relaxation of banking security regulations due to AI tools fueling hacker attacks
2026-10-06 22:31:59
According to CoinMeta, the Financial Services Commission of South Korea announced a suspension of the next phase of its plan to relax banking regulations due to a series of hacker attacks facilitated by AI recently, which resulted in the leakage of customer records from seven financial institutions. The original policy to relax regulations was based on the assumption that AI could enhance security defenses, but these attacks even affected institutions that were rated as the safest. The policy involves South Korea's network isolation rules, which require financial companies to physically isolate their internal business systems from the internet. These rules were initially implemented due to cyberattacks in the late 2000s, and public institutions have been protected since 2007, while banks have been protected since 2014. The Financial Services Commission stated that it still supports the principle of relaxing regulations, but further review is needed.
