CFTC Allows exchanges to convert index futures into true perpetual contracts
2026-10-07 00:02:54
According to CoinMeta, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has issued a temporary relief measure that allows designated contract markets to convert certain broad-based security index futures into true perpetual contracts. Exchanges can remove expiration dates under conditions that protect customers and require notification and filing. This relief measure applies to existing eligible contracts and will expire on October 20th. This move marks a new step forward for the U.S. derivatives market towards the structure of true perpetual contracts that crypto traders are familiar with. On October 5th, market regulators stated that designated contract markets could convert certain existing perpetual-style broad-based security index futures into contracts without an expiration date. Although this relief measure is temporary and conditional, it still represents a significant change in how U.S. regulatory venues construct perpetual contracts.
