Factors driving the growth in electricity demand include the use of AI data centers and cryptocurrencies, as well as the increasing role of electricity in heating and transportation. Commercial electricity sales are expected to reach record highs, with commercial sales projected at 154.9 billion kilowatt-hours in 2026, residential sales at 154.1 billion kilowatt-hours, and industrial electricity usage at 105.5 billion kilowatt-hours. EIA also predicts that the average wholesale electricity price in 2026 will be $52 per megawatt-hour, an increase of 11% from 2025.
