Europol: Quantum risks mainly exist in exposed wallets
2026-10-08 02:19:27
CoinMeta data: In a report released on Wednesday, the European Police Organization (Europol) stated that quantum computers cannot crack blockchain, but exposed digital wallets will be at risk. The report indicates that approximately 6.04 million Bitcoin wallet public keys have been made public, and these wallets are considered "the main vulnerability points to the quantum threat." If quantum computers become powerful enough, they might use these public keys to obtain private keys and take control of the coins. The report also notes that cracking a 256-bit hash function would require about 2^128 quantum operations, which is still an "astronomical number under foreseeable technology." The report concludes that "cryptocurrencies will not collapse due to quantum computing," but rather, "active adaptation, rather than a system collapse, is the most likely outcome."
