According to CoinMeta, Italian police have arrested 30 individuals suspected of operating an underground bank for organized crime through car rental businesses, and seized approximately 21 million euros (about 24 million US dollars) in cash, bank deposits, cryptocurrencies, boats, jewelry, and luxury watches. The operation was carried out by the Italian Financial Police (Guardia di Finanza), with the aim of cracking down on suspects associated with “ndrangheta”, “camorra” and organized crime groups from Foggia in southern Italy. Of the 16 arrested, 14 were imprisoned, while 2 were captured in Spain and 1 in Switzerland. Investigators stated that the business was operated by three Italians, two of whom were long-term associates of the “ndrangheta” Crotone family and had been convicted in previous mafia investigations. Prosecutors claimed that accomplices from China and Albania assisted in operating the network.
