Japan's inflation rate breaks through the central bank's 2% target for the first time
2026-10-23 16:56:06
According to CoinMeta, Japan's inflation rate has risen above the 2% target set by the Bank of Japan (BOJ) for the first time this year, with the core inflation rate climbing from 1.7% in August to 2.1% in September. This is the first time it has exceeded the target since December last year. Notably, Japan has experienced 15 years of continuous deflation since the late 1990s. The annual overall inflation rate exceeding 2% between 2022 and 2025 represents the longest duration since 1982. Higher fuel costs, a weaker yen, and strong demand for artificial intelligence are driving up prices. The Bank of Japan has raised interest rates by 50 basis points to 1.25% this year, reaching a new high in 31 years. Markets expect another interest rate hike before the end of the year.
