S&P warns of rising credit risk for U.S. data centers

According to CoinMeta, Standard & Poor's Global Ratings indicates that data centers may face the risk of a downgrade in their credit ratings due to construction suspensions and project cancellations triggered by public opposition in the United States. In a report released on Friday, S&P analysts including Chris Mooney pointed out that delays in projects caused by limited grid capacity, environmental sustainability controversies, and adjustments to land zoning policies could further increase the credit risks of these data center projects. The report analyzed construction suspension measures in New York State, Texas, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Arizona, and tracked 146 data center projects that have been delayed or cancelled in the United States, about three-quarters of which are related to opposition from local residents. S&P noted that the actual impact of these factors on credit ratings is still limited at present, but if construction suspensions, slowed approvals, or possible policy reversals lead to significant project delays, developers may need to provide tenants with rent deductions and could even face the risk of tenants terminating contracts early, thereby damaging the credit status of the projects.
