German minister proposes an artificial intelligence tax, possibly targeting American companies

According to CoinMeta, German Minister of Education and Family Karin Prien hopes to impose a new tax on the value created by artificial intelligence. The tax imposed on artificial intelligence service providers may affect American companies, while a broader tax on commercial activities generated by artificial intelligence will impact American companies operating in Germany. The "2026 Artificial Intelligence Index" released by Stanford University shows that in 2025, the private sector in the United States invested $285.9 billion in the field of artificial intelligence, compared to only $20.9 billion in Europe as a whole. For American artificial intelligence service providers that sell products to Germany, the new tax could reduce their profit margins or increase the costs for their customers. Such tax measures may penalize companies for adopting technologies that enhance productivity. However, there are currently no specific alliance plans, and the tax rates and scope of taxation have not yet been determined.
