Binance Confirms North Korean Hackers Stole $6.3 Billion Using Social Engineering
2026-11-04 03:47:23
According to CoinMeta, North Korean hackers used fake social media profiles and fraudulent job offers to carry out a social engineering attack that lasted for several months, successfully stealing a record amount of $6.3 billion in cryptocurrencies. As a result of this attack, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange had to suspend customer withdrawals. Experts and blockchain investigators have attributed this theft to North Korea, which has long been accused of conducting large-scale cryptocurrency thefts to fund its nuclear weapons program under international sanctions. Hackers pretended to be recruiters, contacted a wallet software engineer who worked for a company, and after two interviews, induced him to download a coding task containing malicious code. This incident highlights the ongoing attack strategy of the North Korean regime against the cryptocurrency industry and high-net-worth individuals.
