According to CoinMeta, Google plans to invest $15 billion to expand its data center and cloud computing operations in Malaysia in order to meet the demand for digital infrastructure driven by the artificial intelligence boom. As stated in a statement released on Wednesday, Google will build new computing centers and invest in local water resource protection, power production, as well as skills training for Malaysian residents. The related investment plan will be implemented between 2027 and 2028. Google is joining other global technology companies in expanding its business presence in Malaysia, which has become a major data center hub in Southeast Asia due to its relatively low operating costs, reliable infrastructure, and its geographical advantage of being adjacent to commercial centers such as Singapore. This has attracted companies like Oracle and Amazon to set up operations there. These companies all need to expand their data storage and processing capabilities to meet the growing demands from artificial intelligence services. Google indicates that the construction of the new facilities over the next two years is expected to contribute $1.1 billion to the Malaysian economy and support more than 37,000 local jobs each year. Once the data centers are operational, they are expected to maintain over 9,000 local jobs annually, involving technicians, mechanical and electrical engineers, logistics, and security management personnel, among others.
