OpenAI acquires Pierre, Codex begins to compete for GitHub's business

According to CoinMeta, OpenAI has announced the acquisition of the development tool startup Pierre Computer, with plans to integrate code hosting capabilities into Codex in order to directly compete with Microsoft’s GitHub. Two open-source tools from Pierre, Trees and Diffs, are already in use within Codex; they are responsible for browsing project files and checking code changes, respectively. In addition, OpenAI is also interested in Pierre’s commercial code hosting service Code Storage, which allows for saving code, recording modification history, and provides API to enable AI and agent to directly create and manage code repositories, supporting multiple agent to operate simultaneously. Currently, programming products such as Lovable, Bolt, and Amp that utilize AI are already in use. OpenAI is also in the process of upgrading its own code management system; its self-developed tool Pando, announced on November 2nd, is specifically designed to address performance issues associated with a large number of agent writing code and submitting modifications simultaneously. This tool has been put into internal use, and the median time required for code pushes has been reduced by nearly 80%. After the acquisition is completed, OpenAI will gradually integrate Code Storage into Codex; Pierre’s existing open-source projects will continue to remain open-source.
