According to CoinMeta, on Thursday, U.S. stocks tumbled significantly as investors, concerned about a slowdown in data center construction, rushed to sell off tech stocks. The Nasdaq closed down 5.52%, entering a technical correction zone, while the S&P 500 index fell 4.36% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 3.44%. All three major indices recorded their largest single-day declines since April 2025. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders called for a nationwide pause in data center construction, stating, "The American people do not want to see large tech oligarchs destroying the environment, cutting jobs, and threatening the future of humanity." Tim Holland, Chief Investment Officer at orion, noted that investors are currently choosing to "wait and see until they can more clearly assess the impact of the election results on AI's capital expenditure cycle."
