France raises its wine production forecast, but it is still 10% lower than the five-year average

According to CoinMeta, France has raised its forecast for this year's wine production. Rainfall at the end of summer alleviated the effects of drought, but consecutive heatwaves still damaged grape yields. Coupled with a continuous reduction in the area of vineyards planted, the overall production is expected to remain low. A report from the French Ministry of Agriculture indicates that based on the data from the first round of harvest declarations, this year's wine production is estimated to be around 36.7 million hectoliters, higher than the October forecast of 35 million hectoliters. This represents a 3% increase year-on-year, but it is still 10% lower than the average over the past five years. As one of the world's major wine-producing countries, French vineyards are continuously impacted by extreme weather, and champagne production is expected to decrease by nearly half compared to 2025. At the same time, changes in drinking habits and a weak economic environment have led to a sustained decline in demand for wine, further exacerbating industry pressures. The decline in wine and spirits exports is also weighing on France's food trade balance. The upward revision in this year's production forecast from October is mainly due to better-than-expected per-unit yields in the Languedoc-Roussillon and Charente regions. These two areas account for about half of France's total wine production. In addition, the production in the Champagne region and southeastern France has also improved. In recent years, French wine production has been on the decline due to reduced vineyard planting areas and decreased per-unit yields caused by hot and dry weather.
