Apple's stock rose about 3% on Monday, bringing its total market capitalization to approximately $4.94 trillion, surpassing Nvidia to become the world's most valuable publicly traded company. Nvidia's market capitalization was approximately $4.83 trillion during the same period. The market attributes this change to a shift in investor sentiment ahead of tech earnings season.

Funds place greater emphasis on controlling capital expenditures

Recently, investor attitudes toward AI investments by large tech companies have shifted. Compared to some peers who continue to expand infrastructure spending, Apple's capital expenditure path has been more restrained. Data from Yahoo Finance AlphaSpace shows that Apple's capital expenditures have declined over the past three quarters.

Jay Woods, chief market strategist at Freedom Capital Markets, said that Apple had previously faced criticism for its relatively low level of investment in AI, but has now avoided the pressure of high capital expenditures. As earnings season unfolds, the market is focusing more on profit margins and cash efficiency than just the speed of AI expansion.

Apple's AI approach is more cautious.

The report mentions that Apple's strategy for artificial intelligence is to gradually integrate Apple Intelligence features into its devices while avoiding a significant increase in infrastructure spending. In the current market environment, this approach is seen by some investors as less risky.

Meanwhile, the market is also comparing the performance of other large tech companies. Alphabet's stock price is still up about 3% this year, while Tesla's has fallen by about 30%. This divergence further reinforces the question: can AI investments translate into returns without compressing profit margins?

Earlier this month, a new Chinese AI model also triggered a reassessment of the chip sector. Some traders described it as another "DeepSeek moment" for the sector. Against this backdrop, Apple's slower pace of AI development seems more readily accepted by the market.

Financial reports and management handover become the next focus.

Next, investors will be watching to see if Apple can continue to expand the coverage of Apple Intelligence without significantly increasing its capital costs. This will be one of the key focuses of this week's earnings call.

The report also stated that Thursday's earnings call will be Tim Cook's last as CEO. Cook will step down as CEO on September 1st, becoming executive chairman. John Ternus, who has long been in charge of hardware engineering, will succeed him as CEO.

Besides the management changes, the progress of Apple's product line is also attracting attention. Reports indicate that the company is preparing a smart glasses model with a greater emphasis on privacy protection, potentially unveiled next June. The design will include limiting facial recognition functionality and reducing continuous cloud recording.

In addition, Apple is expanding AppleCare One to Australia, France, Germany, and the UK. The multi-device service plan is seen as part of its efforts to increase recurring revenue and reduce its reliance on hardware sales.
