Micro-shortform dramas, designed for viewing on mobile phones, are transitioning from being marginal content on short-video platforms to becoming a new business area of interest for Hollywood. With lower production costs and shorter time-to-market cycles, this type of content is attracting actors, production companies, and investors. TechCrunch cites Omdia predicting that the US micro-shortform drama market is expected to generate revenues of $1.5 billion this year.

Platform expansion drives market heating up

Micro-dramas are usually released in episodes of a few minutes each, with plots that emphasize twists and suspense, aiming to continuously drive users to follow the updates and pay for them. This format first developed rapidly in China and then spread overseas. Currently, applications such as ReelShort and DramaBox have gained a presence in the American market, and TikTok also launched PineDrama earlier this year.

Against the backdrop of pressure in the traditional film and television industry, the attractiveness of this sector is on the rise. On one hand, content producers hope to produce content at lower costs and at a faster pace; on the other hand, TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts are continuously drawing away users' attention, pushing vertical short-form content to become a new direction of competition.

Multiple artists entered in different ways.

TechCrunch It seems that some Hollywood celebrities have started to appear directly in micro-series, while others have chosen to collaborate with platforms, establish their own companies, or make strategic investments in this field.

The project featuring James Franco is considered one of the earlier implementations under the new vertical screen content protocol of the Screen Actors Guild of America, SAG-AFTRA. This protocol is mainly aimed at the production of low-budget micro-series, and it has also prompted the market to observe whether such content will provide new job opportunities for actors and behind-the-scenes teams.

Issa Rae collaborated with PineDrama, which is under Hoorae Media and TikTok, to launch a thriller series titled Screen Time in May. Reports indicate that the series garnered nearly 75 million views in its first week on air, and subsequently its total playback count exceeded 150 million times, making it one of the strongest-performing vertical-screen series on the platform at that time.

From participating in projects to building platforms and making investments

In addition to their acting roles, some artists are also further involved in the platform construction. Jesse Tyler Ferguson will launch a musical comedy titled Theater Kids Vs.Zombies for the vertical-screen narrative platform aTwist. Unlike common love stories or melodramatic narratives, this work leans more towards comedy and campus themes.

Taye Diggs has taken another step forward. Not only was he announced in January of this year to star in and serve as the executive producer for the CandyJar project " Off Limits & All Mine ", but he also launched his own mobile vertical-screen content platform, Microhouse Films. Reports mention that the platform launched 8 projects initially, including works developed in collaboration with Lifetime.

Kim Kardashian has not yet appeared in any micro-dramas, but has entered this market through investment. TechCrunch stated that she, along with Kris Jenner and other angel investors, invested in GammaTime.

From the current trend, the appeal of micro-shortform dramas to Hollywood is no longer limited to actors taking on roles, but has extended to production, distribution, and platform investment. As the US market continues to expand, this sector may attract more traditional film and television professionals to enter.
