Instagram is adjusting the platform's handling method for generating character accounts for AI. According to the latest arrangements, if an account displays characters generated by AI or mainly created by AI, but there is no clear indication of this, the account may face restrictions on the range of content it can access in the future.

Change the tag names to more straightforward expressions.

The platform stated that the existing “AI creator” tags will be renamed to “AI-generated profile”. The purpose of the new names is to make it easier for users to understand that the characters appearing in the accounts are not real people, but are generated by AI or, to a large extent, created by AI.

Instagram It should also be emphasized that this tag is not applicable to all AI use cases. If users are only using AI for image editing, copywriting polishing, graphic production, or other creative tasks, then there is no need to use this tag.

Unrevealed accounts will be restricted from access.

According to the new rules, creators who generate character accounts without correctly marking AI may face restricted distribution. On the contrary, accounts that have already completed the marking will not be penalized simply for using the AI character image.

This means that the focus of the platform is not on prohibiting AI from generating content, but rather on requiring creators to clearly disclose the identity of the account owners. Instagram states that the reason for adjusting the rules is that many users thought they were viewing real-person accounts while browsing, only to later discover that the characters were entirely generated by AI. Such experiences have led to significant dissatisfaction among users.

Relevant controversies have previously arisen on this platform.

Earlier this year, the dating app Goose came under attention due to a group of male internet influencers AI promoting their products on Instagram. Media investigations revealed that there were more than twenty such accounts, some of which even contacted potential users via private messages to encourage them to register for the app.

Healthy content is also another high-risk scenario. In July of this year, The New York Times reported that hundreds of accounts for "doctors," "healers," or health bloggers generated by AI appeared on social media platforms. These accounts promoted health products to users or published claims related to health.

Meta Continuously Coping with Platform Governance Pressures Recently

This adjustment also occurred after Meta faced continuous pressure due to governance issues with the AI tools and platform. Previously, Instagram was criticized for a feature that allowed users to generate images using others' portraits. The reason for this criticism was that the feature used public content without obtaining explicit, proactive authorization, and as a result, Meta subsequently took this feature offline.

In addition, Meta reached a $18 billion settlement with several states in the United States last week regarding allegations of the impact of Facebook and Instagram on minors. Under the agreement, Meta will introduce restrictions such as a default daily usage limit of two hours for youth accounts, night mode interception, and silent notifications during class hours.
