After a period of about a month of calm, the conflict between the United States and Iran has escalated again, leading to a rise in international oil prices. The market's concerns are not only focused on the situation in the Middle East itself but also on whether the disruptions to transportation through the Strait of Hormuz will continue to affect global markets in terms of energy, shipping, and inflation pressures.

Open hostilities resurface between the United States and Iran

According to reports, the U.S. Central Command confirmed that U.S. forces struck two rocket launchers on Iran's Larak Island on Sunday. This is the first time the U.S. has publicly acknowledged launching strikes against Iranian targets since late July. Iranian state media reported that Tehran subsequently carried out retaliatory actions against U.S. bases in Jordan.

At the same time, the UAE stated that on Monday, they intercepted an Iranian drone over their territorial waters. With multiple incidents occurring in succession, concerns about a further deterioration of the situation in the Middle East have risen in the market.

The transportation through the Strait of Hormuz is disrupted.

The conflict continues to suppress traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. This strait accounts for about 20% of global oil transportation and is one of the most sensitive waterways in the international energy market. With restricted passage, the supply of crude oil is expected to tighten, and oil prices have remained high despite a sharp rise at the beginning of the war.

Rising energy prices are also having a ripple effect on other sectors. Increased costs of gasoline and transportation mean that consumer goods and logistics prices are under further pressure.

Bessent predicts that oil prices will fall back

Despite the renewed tensions and continuing rise in oil prices, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated in an interview with CNBC that he expects oil prices to fall soon, and expressed his confusion over why oil prices have risen again.

Last week, Benedict also proposed to increase pressure on Iran through more sanctions measures. In the days that followed, attacks between the United States and Iran resumed, keeping the market on high alert regarding the subsequent situation.

Brent crude oil rises above $90

  • Brent crude oil is priced at $90.5 to $91.3 per barrel.
  • Intraday increase of about 3%
  • The S&P 500, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, and the Nasdaq all fell.

As of the time of reporting, the S&P 500 index fell by 0.5%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped by 333 points, or 0.6%, and the Nasdaq index declined by 0.4%. The linkage between oil prices, stock markets, and geopolitical situations remains a focal point of concern for Wall Street at present.
