Former Disney CEO CEO Bob Chapek stated on Monday that during his brief tenure as the head of this "Mickey Mouse House," he expressed his concerns to the company's board of directors "weekly" regarding the then Executive Chairman Bob Iger.
Chapek has always remained silent about being fired by this media giant nearly four years ago, but in his new memoir Behind the Castle Walls : My Thirty Years at the Happiest Place on Earth, as well as in an interview with CNBC Squawk Box, he discussed this experience in more detail for the first time.
Chapek was originally in charge of Disney's theme park and experience business. In 2020, just a few weeks before cinemas and theme parks around the world were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he was appointed as the company's leader. While he worked hard to address these challenges, Iger remained in the company, responsible for Disney's content business, including Disney.
However, Chapek said that Iger subsequently began to gradually regain control. The power struggles that followed were detailed in reports by CNBC in 2023.
Chapek said to CNBC: "When I started to hear that at the lunches and dinners he attended, he would criticize me mercilessly, and I would hear it two or three times a week, with the same points and the same rhetoric, I realized, ‘I’m in trouble.’"
He stated that when he expressed his concerns to Disney's board of directors regarding the issue of Iger, the response he received was: "'He will leave in two years. No problem. That's just the way it is with Bob.'"
But nearly three years after being appointed as CEO, Chapek was eventually replaced by Iger; Iger then returned to this position until March 2026.
Chapek said, "It would be great if, like other CEO, he could serve as the guardian of my new position. It might be tolerable if he remained neutral, but in reality, he is actively opposing me, which I find absolutely unbelievable."
