Cboe and the S&P Dow Jones Index (S&P Dow Jones Indices) are exploring tokenized options contracts, which could further bring one of Wall Street's largest derivatives markets into blockchain-based trading infrastructure.
At the time of the aforementioned discussions, S&P Dow Jones Indexes had already extended the trading hours for the S&P 500 beyond the traditional trading period. In March of this year, the company authorized Trade [ XYZ ] to launch an officially authorized perpetual contract on Hyperliquid, allowing eligible non-U.S. traders to have access to leveraged exposure to the S&P 500 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Tokenized options will represent another step forward: not simply packaging stocks in a blockchain shell, but moving the traditional market structure itself onto the blockchain.
Cboe could potentially bring a vast options market onto the blockchain
Cboe is already at the core of S&P 500 derivatives trading.
Its flagship product, SPX options, provides investors with exposure to the S&P 500 through cash settlement and European-style contracts, with the number of outstanding contracts recently exceeding 22 million.
If a certain version of this market is migrated to blockchain infrastructure, it may introduce features that are closer to the habits of crypto traders, including continuous settlement, programmable collateral, and potentially wider trading hours.
This also aligns with the broader trend of tokenized stocks, which is the increasing use of blockchain to transform the trading, settlement, and transfer methods of traditional securities across different platforms.
The S&P 500 is already migrating to the blockchain.
Discussions about tokenized options do not occur in isolation.
The S&P Dow Jones Index initially collaborated with Centrifuge to bring this benchmark into blockchain investment products, describing tokenization as a way to support programmable, real-time index exposures that could potentially be available around the clock.
Following that are the perpetual contracts on Hyperliquid.
The S&P 500 now supports over $1 trillion in daily trading volume through related futures, options, ETF, and structured products. Therefore, even a small step towards digital infrastructure could be of significant importance.
Wider markets are also developing in the same direction. The trading volume of tokenized stocks in recent weeks has approached $3 billion, and the New York Stock Exchange ( NYSE ) is developing an independent platform for 24/7 tokenized securities trading.
