Famous for its Solana NFT token standard, Metaplex has now launched MPL-3643, which is a tokenization standard designed to directly bring restricted real-world assets and tokenized securities onto Solana.
This standard addresses a core challenge when regulated financial assets are brought onto the blockchain: putting assets on the blockchain does not mean that everyone should be able to purchase, hold, or transfer them.
MPL-3643 enables issuers to take advantage of Solana's sub-second final confirmation, high throughput, and low fees, by directly encoding these advantages into the tokens.
Automated rules for asset transfer
MPL-3643 Allows issuers to configure investor qualifications, transfer restrictions, jurisdictional restrictions, and lock-up periods at the token level.
Before the asset is transferred, the system can check whether the receiving wallet meets the requirements of the issuer. For example, the issuer may restrict assets to verified investors within a specific jurisdiction or prohibit transfers before the end of the lock-up period.
This brings a different experience compared to ordinary unlicensed tokens. Having a Solana wallet does not automatically mean that one can access all assets issued based on MPL-3643. Whether one is qualified will determine whether that wallet can receive or transfer a particular investment.
Metaplex This standard is built on the core infrastructure of Solana, which includes Token-2022, sRFC 37, and Solana Attestation Service. The company describes MPL-3643 as "bringing functionality equivalent to that of ERC-3643 to Solana".
Metaplex Founder Stephen Hess stated: "To bring the financial market onto the blockchain, we need compliant infrastructure, yet we must not sacrifice the composability of Solana or the commitment to an open market. MPL-3643 provides this foundation, enabling existing public market assets to be fully migrated onto the blockchain, and at the same time, it offers new ways for the private market to be opened up to global investors."
One verification can be used for multiple assets.
MPL-3643 also introduces reusable investor verification. Metaplex indicates that this standard can be integrated with trusted identity providers as well as Solana Attestation Service, allowing investors to reuse verification results across different issuers that support this standard.
This may reduce the need for investors to repeatedly submit the same information when dealing with different financial products. However, reusable verification does not mean it is universally applicable. Each issuer can set its own requirements, which means that the verification of one asset does not automatically qualify an investor for another asset.
This distinction is very important because MPL-3643 is aimed at making compliance checks more portable while still retaining the restrictions attached to each investment.
Metaplex plans to integrate MPL-3643 with Orca, Raydium, Solflare, Jupiter, and Phantom upon launch. These integrations may connect restricted assets with the trading platforms and wallets that Solana users are already familiar with.
This standard is currently still in the alpha phase of limited access.
Metaplex Another step in expansion
The launch of MPL-3643 follows closely on the release of Metaplex and Vantage; the latter being its customizable Solana trading terminal.
This product takes Metaplex one step further into the user market, providing traders with customizable dashboards for viewing charts, market data, placing orders, and tracking investment portfolios.
This series of actions demonstrates its broader expansion path: from asset infrastructure to asset discovery and trading. Genesis has provided token issuance infrastructure for the team through Launch Pools, Auctions, and Presales, while Vantage is aimed at research and trading experiences.
MPL-3643 adds another layer of capability to address the issue of how regulated assets can enter the ecosystem and circulate among qualified participants.
