Las Vegas, September 30th / PRNewswire / -- Sophia Space and Redwire Corporation (New York Stock Exchange ticker: RDW) announced today that the two parties have signed a Memorandum of Understanding ( MOU ) to advance the development and deployment of scalable on-orbit computing infrastructure. This collaboration will combine Sophia Space's modular on-orbit computing architecture with Redwire's technical solutions in deployable space systems, solar power generation and distribution, thermal management and cooling, spacecraft integration, avionics, and systems engineering.
According to this MOU, both parties will explore cooperation ranging from recent demonstration tasks to long-term in-orbit data center architectures. Sophia Space is developing a new type of computing infrastructure designed specifically for space environments. Its modular TILE architecture integrates high-performance computing, solar energy, and passive radiative thermal management into a scalable system, aimed at in-orbit artificial intelligence inference, data processing, and other compute-intensive workloads.
By combining the computing architecture of Sophia Space with the space infrastructure and engineering capabilities of Redwire, both parties aim to address a core challenge faced by the emerging in-orbit computing market: the transition from individual technical demonstrations to a repeatable and scalable infrastructure required for the global construction of in-orbit data centers.
"We have already passed the stage of questioning whether high-performance computing is suitable for entering the orbit," said Sophia Space, CEO and co-founder of Rob DeMillo. "The question now is how quickly we can achieve scalability. Redwire brings professional capabilities in deployment and systems that can help us move from single tasks to a continuous computing infrastructure in orbit. This is exactly the transformation we are striving to achieve right now."
"Global computing demand is growing exponentially, and the development of on-orbit data centers represents an exciting paradigm shift, where space infrastructure can extend critical computing power beyond the limitations of ground-based infrastructure," said Al Tadros, Chief Technology Officer of Redwire Space. "As a leading provider of space infrastructure, Redwire is transforming the maturity of the on-orbit data center market into exciting opportunities to build the next generation of architectures and potentially unlock considerable economic value."
Sophia Space and Redwire intend to jointly pursue opportunities with the U.S. government and in the business sector, including projects that may involve DARPA, the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), the Space Development Agency (SDA), and the National Reconnaissance Agency (NRO). Potential areas of cooperation include concept development, joint proposals, internal research and development activities, customer communication, as well as international market opportunities.
