The U.S. Department of Defense awarded a contract worth approximately $20 billion to Boeing for the comprehensive development of the next-generation carrier-based fighter jet, defeating rival Northrop Grumman. Lockheed Martin was excluded from this bidding process in 2025.

U.S. Department of War Press Release
Boeing Wins Another Victory with Its Sixth-Generation Fighter Jet

F/ A-18E /F "Super Hornet"
Details about this aircraft are still limited, but it is expected to possess advanced stealth capabilities, a longer range, and stronger network coordination abilities. It will also operate in conjunction with other drones such as collaborative combat aircraft. The US Navy plans to begin deploying this platform in the 2030s and continue to use it in parallel with F-35C throughout the 2040s.
The importance of Boeing's victory this time lies in the fact that it is their second major success with sixth-generation fighter jets. In March 2025, the United States Air Force chose Boeing to develop the next generation of air superiority fighters under the F-47 program. This project focuses on enhancing range, survivability, lethality, and adaptability.
The combination of the F-47 and F/ A-XX contracts could potentially enable Boeing to play a significant role in the production of fighter jets in the United States for the next few decades.
Boeing's stock price urgently needs a boost
On a longer-term perspective, Boeing's stock price fell by about 14% in 2026, representing a decline of approximately 13.5% from the closing price of $217.08 on September 29, 2025.
Therefore, the F/ A-XX contract brings more than just another major order. It also strengthens Boeing's defense business, which could become very important for its long-term recovery at a time when the company's commercial aircraft division continues to face challenges in production, certification, and execution.
