Whole Foods CEO Jason Buechel discussed Amazon's fresh food business expansion, employee compensation, delivery convenience, and the trade-off between store technology in the Fortune video column. He stated that Amazon aims to transform from a "everything store" to a "daily-use store" through its fresh food business, emphasizing that the goal is to increase broader shopping participation.

Good morning. Just how much do consumers value convenience, cool technology, and low cost? This question is not easy to answer. Ask Whole Foods, the CEO of Jason Buechel and Vice President of Amazon's Global Fresh Stores, and you'll find out. In the newly launched video series CEO Source on Fortune, he discussed the difficult choices Amazon faced when expanding its fresh food business. Last year, this business generated sales of over $150 billion.

His goal is clear: “Amazon has always been known as the ‘everything store,’ and I believe that with our fresh food business, we will become the ‘daily necessities store,’” he told me, pointing out that the goal is to “increase engagement, not only within the fresh food business but also across the broader range of our store operations.”

But everything comes at a cost. We discussed the following issues.

How much salary do you pay to your employees? We live in an era where corporate leaders can become billionaires, while their colleagues struggle to pay their bills. Buechel mentioned that Amazon has recently pledged to invest $230 million to provide higher salaries, benefits, and university-related perks to over 100,000 Whole Foods employees. In many ways, this returns to the Whole Foods company's original mission: before selling the chain store to Amazon in 2017, co-founder John Mackey famously limited executive salaries to 19 times the average salary of regular employees.

Buechel also comes from this culture. He is the eldest son of a cheese manufacturer in Wisconsin, and most of the agricultural products in his family are grown by themselves; before being acquired by Amazon, he served as the Chief Information Officer of Whole Foods, and was also the chosen successor of Mackey.

How high is the cost of convenience? A European friend who came to New York from a mission with the Red Cross of the Democratic Republic of the Congo was shocked by the streets of New York being filled with box trucks, tricycles, electric delivery bicycles, and other delivery vehicles, which are often used to transport goods that people could easily buy by just crossing the street. She found this very chaotic. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani agrees. Last month, in addition to securing a record $131.5 million for delivery workers from DoorDash, he also supported the "Delivery Protection Act" to "curb Amazon's influence on the streets of New York City."

Many people may not agree with this premise and the proposed solution, but I did ask Buechel: Is it worth pursuing the ability to allow people to place orders quickly to buy a banana? He said that what he pursues is predictability, not speed.

How much technology do shoppers really want? I used to really enjoy just swiping my palm over the sensor of Whole Foods to make a payment. In other parts of the Amazon empire, such as Amazon Go, customers don’t prefer to enter retail stores that don’t have a formal checkout counter. Both of these methods are no longer available nowadays.

“In some cases, I think we’re just a bit ahead of what customers actually want in physical stores, whether it’s the grocery stores or convenience stores we launch,” Buechel told me. “We’ll shift our focus towards the same-day delivery service for fresh products. We’ll do this well.”

My interview with Buechel will appear in today's Fortune Daily program. You can watch it at 4 pm through YouTube.

Nvidia's mission-first culture

Nvidia ranked 14th in today’s list of the top 100 best employers in Europe released by Fortune. The Human Resources Director, Febe Punsalan, attributes employee satisfaction to a culture that prioritizes the mission: there is no organizational chart, a flat structure, a responsive suggestion box, and two days of company-wide vacation every quarter. The employee turnover rate is 3.7%, which is lower than the average of 21.9% in the tech industry. However, some employees suggest that these generous benefits have also created a “pressure cooker” type of environment.

Bank financial reports are approaching, but insiders are not convinced.

Last quarter, only 298 insiders from the financial industry bought shares of their own companies – this is the lowest level since VerityData began tracking in 2004. As large banks are about to release their financial reports, some analysts believe this indicates that stock prices seem high, while others argue that it has little relevance to future trends.

NFL tells the Supreme Court: Predicting markets is gambling and should be regulated by each state
NFL has taken the controversy surrounding regulatory oversight of sports betting to the U.S. Supreme Court, arguing in an amicus curiae brief supporting New Jersey's regulatory authorities against Kalshi that sports betting contracts are essentially forms of gambling, and not financial swaps that should be under the exclusive jurisdiction of the federal government. NFL expressed concerns regarding easily manipulable betting categories, the risk of insider information related to injuries and officials, as well as the fact that Kalshi allows users under the age of 18 to participate, while most states have set a minimum age of 21 for sports betting.
