BroadForward provides secure signaling for Terrestar's satellite direct mobile connections in Canada.

Secure DRA / DEA routes and Diameter Firewall have now been launched in the Terrestar Solutions network, enabling seamless satellite-to-mobile connections and extending mobile and Internet of Things (IoT) services to rural and remote communities in Canada.

Montreal, October 13, 2026 / PRNewswire / -- Terrestar Solutions Inc, Canada's only mobile satellite operator with its headquarters and control in the country, today announced in collaboration with the global signaling infrastructure provider BroadForward that BroadForward's 4G routing ( DRA / DEA ) and Diameter Firewall ( DFW ) have been launched in Terrestar's network. This deployment provides standard-based secure signaling, enabling seamless routing of mobile and Internet of Things ( IoT ) traffic between terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks. It also marks a further step for BroadForward into the field of satellite communications, supporting signaling interoperability between Terrestar's non-terrestrial network ( NTN ) infrastructure and the national mobile network.

More than 75% of Canada's land area lacks surface coverage. By routing signaling traffic between satellite and cellular network domains, the platform of BroadForward enables Terrestar to expand its coverage in both directions. This helps Terrestar achieve its broader goal of bringing mobile connectivity to rural and remote communities, and allowing mobile and Internet of Things (IoT) devices to access satellite-based services. These services have already been launched in the industrial and agricultural IoT sectors, and messaging and emergency alerts for consumers have also been included in Terrestar's direct-to-phone roadmap.

This two-way capability is built upon the continuously expanding service territory of Terrestar, which includes its Hybrid IoT platform (launched in February 2026 as Canada's first domestically controlled hybrid satellite-cellular IoT service), as well as the cooperation it established with Monogoto in 2025 to provide hybrid IoT connectivity nationwide.

Terrestar Solutions Chief Technology Officer Serge Legris stated: "The goal of Terrestar is to provide seamless and reliable mobile satellite connectivity throughout Canada. The routing infrastructure of BroadForward is the backbone of our signaling network. It manages our signaling traffic, ensures seamless continuity of satellite cellular services, and accelerates the launch of new services. Together, we are bringing secure and reliable connectivity to places that were once considered unreachable."

Satellite-to-cellular signaling connects dedicated satellite systems to billions of standard smartphones and Internet of Things (IoT) devices. For consumers, it extends two-way messaging and emergency services beyond the coverage of cellular base stations. For businesses, it enables asset tracking and remote monitoring in industries such as logistics, agriculture, energy, and more. Reflecting this commercial potential, analysis firm SNS Insider predicts that the market size for NTN will grow from $11 billion in 2023 to nearly $117 billion by 2032, with a compound annual growth rate of about 42%.

The core of this deployment is BroadForward's BFX Unified Signaling Core ( USC ) – this is a multi-protocol engine that has won the GSMA GLOMO award, supporting the routing, interoperability, and security product portfolio of BroadForward. This includes STP, DRA / DEA, SCP, SEPP, as well as firewall functions that cover 2G/3G, 4G, and 5G. This unified engine provides a platform for Terrestar that can handle both satellite and terrestrial signaling simultaneously, and it offers support throughout the evolution from 4G interoperability based on Diameter to 5G standalone networking, as well as in the future for direct connection to devices via NTN services.

The signaling products of BroadForward have been deployed with over 100 MNO, MVNO, IPX, NTN, MNP and IoT service providers worldwide, including several of the globally leading IPX providers.

BroadForward CEO Taco Schoute stated: "We are proud that Terrestar Solutions has chosen BroadForward to support its signaling connections. The same multi-generation engines that protect terrestrial connectivity today are also safeguarding the satellite-to-cellular links that will define coverage in the next decade. This highlights the increasingly important role of BroadForward in NTN interconnectivity signaling, connecting satellite-based networks with terrestrial operators and roaming partners to achieve comprehensive mobile coverage."
