In August, a family of five moved into their new home on the Gold Coast in Australia. Due to limited budgets, they purchased most of their furniture and household items through Facebook Marketplace and second-hand stores, spending a total of about 5,200 Australian dollars. This not only saved them thousands of dollars but also gave their home a more unique personality.

In August, my family of five moved into a new home on the Gold Coast of Australia. Since moving across states from a rural area in Victoria, we have been living with my parents, and that has been the case since January of this year.

When leaving Victoria, we put all our belongings in a storage unit because we weren't sure how long we would stay on the Gold Coast. So by the time we actually moved into our new home, we only had a few items with us.

We quickly checked online to see how much it would cost to fully furnish a three-bedroom duplex apartment in that area. The estimate generated by AI ranged from 8,000 to 16,000 Australian dollars (about 5,580 to 11,150 US dollars). We are a family of five, and our budget is quite tight; such expenses seem quite high to us.

So, we decided to furnish our new home with second-hand items. Apart from bedding and some kitchen essentials, such as a set of dishes, almost everything we have was purchased from Facebook Marketplace or second-hand stores.

Buying second-hand goods brings a lot of fun, as well as various benefits.

Saved thousands of Australian dollars

Saving money is of utmost importance to us. In total, it cost about 5200 Australian dollars to decorate this house, which means we can use the money that we were planning to spend on buying new things elsewhere.

When we find items online, I often take the time to check the recommended retail prices for comparison. For example, we bought a king-sized bed, a mattress, and two nightstands for a total of 650 Australian dollars. The same set of items would cost 2828 Australian dollars if purchased new, and that doesn’t even include the mattress. We also found a cream-colored sofa that was hardly used at all; we paid 800 Australian dollars for it, while the retail price for a new one is around 2800 Australian dollars.

Overall, buying second-hand goods means that we only need to pay a small portion of the price of new goods. This has saved us thousands of Australian dollars in total.

Reduced hesitation and wasted time.

When my husband and I were decorating our first home in Melbourne, we would compare different options and visit several furniture stores before making a purchase. The process was time-consuming and, to be honest, quite frustrating, especially since we also had a two-year-old child to take care of. This time, however, we relied almost entirely on second-hand furniture, and the whole process went much more smoothly and effortlessly.

No need to struggle anymore over which refrigerator or which table to choose. As long as it looks decent, the size is suitable, and the price is acceptable, we will buy it.

Make your home more unique.

I don’t have much talent for home decoration, but shopping on Marketplace has indeed added a lot of style to our home. For example, once I saw a lady packing up and selling a bunch of plants and flower stands in different styles, and I immediately bought them. Now that area has become one of my favorite spots in the house.

The thrill of treasure hunting is very interesting.

As time went by, I found myself becoming increasingly obsessed with hunting for second-hand items both online and in physical stores. Being able to purchase beautiful items for a fraction of their original price is always particularly exciting.

One of my favorite purchases from a second-hand shop was a beautiful, extra-large white fruit bowl. At the bottom of the bowl, there were the words “Made in Italy”. Every time I see it, I imagine where it originally came from, who it once belonged to, and how it ended up in my hands.

I enjoy the process of bargaining.

We have been to many countries where haggling is considered a part of the culture, and I personally enjoy reviving those long-dormant bargaining skills from time to time.

Once we went to buy a refrigerator, and only upon arrival did we notice that there was a dent on the front. So I managed to negotiate a price reduction of 50 Australian dollars. Perhaps this was just a small victory, but it indeed helped us save some money.

Sustainability also attracts us greatly.

It makes us satisfied with our choices to give second-hand furniture in good condition a new use value, rather than sending them to landfills. Along the way, we also discovered many beautiful items, many of which have their own stories.

There is a beautiful oak dining table; the original owner was truly heartbroken when saying goodbye to it, as he and his late wife had shared countless meals around this table. There is also a large, extra-large bed along with a nightstand, which were purchased from a Scotsman who lived in a high-rise apartment with sea views. Additionally, there is a lamp that has been repurposed, made by a grandmother’s own hands, and now it has been given a new life.

Of course, buying second-hand items also requires patience. Sometimes, only when you arrive at the place will you realize that what the seller describes as “in good condition” doesn’t match your own standards. But for us, such trade-offs are definitely worth it.

We saved thousands of Australian dollars, found new homes for furniture that could have been used further, and ultimately ended up with a home that is more interesting than the uniform, standard layouts common elsewhere.
