As Cathay Pacific celebrates its 80th anniversary, it is investing $19 billion in upgrading its fleet, cabins, lounges, and digital products.
This includes newly upgraded premium economy and business class seats, which will first appear on some modified Boeing 777-300ER aircraft models.
As airlines increasingly seek passengers willing to pay a higher price for additional comfort and accompanying services, Cathay Pacific has also launched its upgraded products.
Throughout the industry, airlines are investing in expanding premium economy class areas, introducing flatbed suites, upgrading dining options, and providing access to lounges, as the revenue generated by premium fares far exceeds that of regular economy class seats. Companies such as Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines have recently also announced new premium economy class cabins and upgraded business class suites for long-haul flights.
At an event in New York City on Thursday, I personally experienced Cathay Pacific's new premium cabin to gain a closer understanding of these improvements.
Cathay Pacific is introducing new premium economy and business class seats on its Boeing 777-300ER fleet.

These upgraded products are now available on Boeing 777-300ER flights between Hong Kong and Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Vancouver; by 2027, these seats will also be provided on flights from New York's Kennedy Airport to Hong Kong.
The price of upgrading the seats is also not low.
According to the website of Cathay Pacific, for flights in mid-November from Los Angeles to Hong Kong, which use modified Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, the one-way ticket price for the Premium Economy class ranges from approximately $1,500 to $2,900, while for Business Class it is between $3,700 and nearly $5,000.
I first experienced the premium economy class, and a senior executive from Cathay Pacific told me, “The entire experience is designed from the customer’s perspective.”
Guotai Air's Vice President of Sales and Marketing for the Americas, Jason Li, stated that the airline focuses on providing "a sufficiently distinct difference between premium economy class and economy class" to make upgrades more worthwhile for the higher ticket prices.
Li said, "From the perspective of the cabin seat, there is a small wing-like design on the side of the headrest, which provides greater privacy. Compared to the economy class, the recline angle of our new premium economy class seats is also much better."
After I sat down, a flight attendant happily lowered the footrest and adjusted the seat to a reclined position, allowing me to fully experience the luxury of economy class.
I feel as if I'm sitting in an armchair, rather than a plane seat.
Another added bonus is the leather pillow with foldable side wings, which provides support for the headrest, making it so comfortable that a travel neck pillow is almost unnecessary.
The side of the headrest that is longer also comes with a built-in reading light.

Other supporting facilities include an in-flight entertainment system that supports Bluetooth, equipped with a 15.6-inch 4K screen, as well as multiple charging ports.
Guotai members can use WiFi for free on board when traveling in Premium Economy Class.
Subsequently, I experienced Cathay Pacific's Business Class product Aria Suite.
The first version of Aria Suite was unveiled in October 2024, equipped with sliding doors and partitions to achieve the highest level of privacy.
On long-distance flights, this seat can be completely flattened to become a flat bed.
The touch control passenger unit, also known as TSPCU, allows passengers to control the lighting and seat positions.
Passengers can choose between three lighting settings: Reading, Mode, and Console. They can also switch between three seat positions: Coasting, Takeoff, and Landing ( TTL ), Rest, and Sleep.
Aria Suite also comes with multiple hidden storage compartments.
A flight attendant told me that these storage compartments are very convenient for putting headphones or other items when going to the bathroom or getting up to move around to promote blood circulation.
Aria Suite There are also wireless charging stations, and the position of these can be identified by subtle markings on the marble-pattern design of the side console.
In addition, there is another mirror that can be taken out from the small cabinet where the entertainment remote controls for the devices are stored.
The on-board entertainment screen size of Aria Suite is 24 inches, which is the largest screen size offered by Cathay Pacific to date.
In addition to upgraded seats, the Boeing 777-300ER business class cabin also features a new amenity: an in-flight art gallery.
Cathay Pacific has collaborated with Hong Kong artists to display their original works in the "Skylight Gallery".
Li indicates: 'Considering the product differentiation and the experience we provide during flights, we are very proud of that. I think it is truly unique and takes us to a new level in terms of customer advocacy.'
The modified Boeing 777 models of Cathay Pacific are aimed at attracting passengers who are willing to pay for more space, privacy, and higher-end services.
For passengers willing to pay a premium, Cathay Pacific's new seats might turn a long-distance flight into a luxurious experience, rather than something merely barely tolerable.
