Do you still remember that the employment report from Anthropic suggested that gardeners are one of the safest occupations, since they neither pull weeds nor can distinguish between roses and dandelions? I even joked about this back in AI Insider earlier this year.
However, Anthropic has updated this research, which has made us a bit more anxious.
This time, it raises an even bigger question: what would happen if AI were combined with robots? This change pushes many manual tasks to a higher level of vulnerability. On paper, it seems reasonable; but in reality, I am skeptical.
For example, anyone who has actually spent time working in a garden knows how difficult it is to identify the correct plants, to kneel down in an awkward position, and then to pull out the weeds by their roots without damaging anything around them.
Robots are indeed making progress. But if you have ever seen robots handling a messy real-world task, then you would know that there is still a long way to go between research and practical application.
The following figure shows how the visibility of work tasks may change after adding robots in several occupational categories. Cleaning and maintenance jobs include gardeners, as well as cleaners and similar positions.
