Google is making the Gemini AI assistants that are already in millions of cars, trucks, and SUV more personalized, a move that could lead consumers to become more deeply involved with the company's product ecosystem.
Google stated on Tuesday that it is upgrading a personal intelligence feature for in-vehicle Gemini. This feature will be able to access information from Gmail, Google calendar, YouTube, Maps, Google search history, as well as other connected Google services, in order to understand users' preferences, activities, and past experiences.
Google stated that “Personal Intelligence with Gemini” will be introduced in vehicles in two ways: one is through Android Auto, which is an app that runs on users' smartphones and can wirelessly communicate with the vehicle's infotainment system, projecting navigation, media, and messages onto the in-vehicle system; the other is through Google Built to in, which are software and services that are directly integrated into the vehicle.
This feature will first be launched on Android Auto, starting from today, and will be extended to cars equipped with Google Built - in in the coming months.
Google initially launched Gemini in Android Auto last November. Meanwhile, the “Personal Intelligence” feature of Gemini was fully rolled out in the United States in March and is currently in beta testing in global markets.
Google stated in a blog post that this latest upgrade will "connect" users' various Google applications together.
The driver needs to actively choose to enable it for Personal Intelligence to take effect. Once enabled, users may experience various cross-application integrations. For example, a driver on their way to the airport might receive a reminder that a flight in their calendar has been delayed.
Google stated that this feature will allow users to make complex requests in natural language. Taking the aforementioned airport scenario as an example, a user could first ask the AI assistant about their boarding gate, and then quickly follow up with whether the flight is still on time. Google claims that Gemini will provide answers to both of these questions simultaneously.
This level of deep integration may cause concern among consumers, but Google states that users still have full control over their Personal Intelligence data. Google claims that this feature can be turned on or off at any time, and users can also selectively decide which apps to connect to.
