St George’s Hospital and Epsom Hospital introduce MazeMap to improve patient experience
NHS Hospital Group has introduced MazeMap digital navigation services to help patients and visitors find their way to the treatment locations.
Trondheim, Norway, October 21, 2026 / PRNewswire / -- St. George's Hospital and Uppsala Hospital have introduced a digital navigation service to help patients and visitors find their way to the treatment locations. Both hospitals are part of the St George's Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals and Health Group ( gesh ). The group has received innovative funding support for this project from the New Hospitals Plan ( New Hospital Programme ).
Construction and service relocations at the hospital campuses may make the familiar routes to the hospital more difficult to recognize. This service allows the hospital to continuously update digital location information as departments are moved, while also supporting patients with different navigation needs.
This implementation combines digital maps with employee training to enable hospital staff to maintain location information when there are changes in departments and services. Patients and volunteers also participated in the communication sessions, and information kiosks and touchscreens are part of the phased rollout as well.
gesh, the head of the digital communication platform, Paul Sheringham said: "Finding one's way in large hospitals can be quite challenging, especially for first-time visitors, those whose native language is not English, or for people with accessibility needs. Helping people find their way is an important part of improving the patient experience."
David Roskams indicates that the experience from this project was originally intended to provide a reference for the design of the future Hospital 2.0.
After evaluating the available options and seeking reference opinions from other NHS institutions, the team selected MazeMap within the available budget range due to its corresponding capabilities. Employee training is an important part of helping the hospital prepare for subsequent self-maintenance of this service.
gesh, the Director of Digital Transformation Group, David Roskams said: "The experience of actually building and creating these maps is very good."
The implementation process also includes the following steps: introducing these maps to patients, asking them to use them independently, and inviting them to share their experiences. Short videos and posters with QR codes have also provided support for the launch of this service.
This service is designed to reduce the burden that "how to find a reservation location" represents for patients. gesh By helping people navigate in unfamiliar buildings and continuously updating route information as services are relocated, the group hopes to make visits to St George's Hospital and Epsom Hospital easier and less stressful.
