The campaign team of Mary Perotella ( Mary Peltola ), a Democratic candidate for U.S. Senator from Alaska, has requested a federal judge to expedite the trial of a lawsuit filed by the Trump administration. This lawsuit could prevent the certification of the election results. Perotella's camp hopes that the judge will dismiss the case before the election date.
A lawyer from Pertola's campaign team and the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee (DSCC) stated in a court document later on Sunday evening that they are "seriously concerned" that if this lawsuit has not been resolved by November 3, which is the election day, President Donald Trump and Attorney General Todd Blanch (Todd Blanche) will use this case to "pave the way for illegal challenges to Pertola's possible victory."
The United States Department of Justice filed this lawsuit with a federal district court last Friday. Trump stated later on the same day that he had ordered the lawsuit to be filed.
In the lawsuit, the Department of Justice requested the judge to prohibit the certification of the Senate election results in Alaska, on the premise that the incumbent Republican Senator Dan Sullivan (Dan Sullivan) would lose, and that the margin of defeat could be attributed to some voters mistakenly casting their ballots for another candidate, Daniel J. Sullivan (Daniel J. Sullivan).
In this case, the Department of Justice wishes to conduct an investigation to determine whether a sufficient number of voters were confused due to the similar names of the two male candidates, resulting in them casting their votes for the other candidate. The report indicates that this candidate is clearly former Congressman Pertola. The Department of Justice stated that the "sole purpose" of Daniel J. Sullivan's candidacy was "to help Pertola's campaign by reducing the number of votes cast for Senator Sullivan."
The winner of this election may determine which political party will control the majority seats in the Senate starting from January next year.
Pertola's campaign team and DSCC requested in court documents that the judge issue an order demanding that the Department of Justice respond to their motions to intervene in the case and to dismiss the lawsuit by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Alaska time, and also requested that a reply to that response be submitted by Wednesday.
The motion states: "And to dismiss this case this week."
The document states: 'The Department of Justice filed this lawsuit during the election period, less than two weeks before the election day. The issues raised are entirely under the jurisdiction of state law, and these same issues were already subject to a final ruling by the Alaska Supreme Court several months ago.'
The document also states: "The Department of Justice seeks an unprecedented order to prevent the certification of U.S. Senate elections if a candidate supported by the president loses by a narrow margin."
The document states: 'As reflected in the proposed motion to reject, the arguments put forward by the Ministry of Justice have no legal basis whatsoever.'
The document also states: 'The court should not allow this lawsuit to hang over the ongoing elections like a sword of Damocles, providing a false legitimacy for the president and the attorney general to continue spreading false narratives about the Alaska elections as voting continues and counting of votes begins next week.'
CNBC stated that they have requested a comment from the Ministry of Justice.
The Department of Justice has not yet clarified how any investigations conducted before the certification of election results will determine whether a voter was confused about which Sullivan they actually voted for. On the ballots for this election, Senator Sullivan's name is listed as Dan S . Sullivan, with a note indicating that she is the current incumbent and a Republican. The name of the other candidate is spelled in its full form as Daniel J . Sullivan, without any additional explanatory text beside it.
On Friday evening, during an interview with Nicole Wallace (the host of MS NOW), who is also involved in the issuance of N-token lle and Wallace, Pertola stated that the lawsuit from the Department of Justice "represents the kind of corruption that Alaskans detest deeply."
Pertola said, "This is clearly an extremely desperate attempt to further manipulate the system with his allies in Washington D.C., in order to continue to hold onto power."
