Discord announced on Tuesday that it would make some conversations on its public servers more easily searchable on the internet. This feature will first be available for "discoverable servers," and starting from November 16, a webpage will be generated for each such server. From mid-December, some public channel messages may also appear in search engine results. The announcement has raised concerns regarding privacy and whether the content could be used to train AI models.

On Tuesday, Discord announced that it would make some conversations on its public servers more easily searchable on the internet. This update applies to conversations on "discoverable servers" ( Discoverable Servers ), which are those public Discord servers that administrators have set to appear in the platform's "Server Discovery" feature.

Discord indicates that this move is aimed at helping more people find useful information that might otherwise be buried within the Discord conversations.

According to Discord, over 63,000 discoverable servers host a variety of discussions ranging from game guides and fan communities to language learning and niche interests. By making some of these conversations searchable, Discord hopes to extend the influence of these communities beyond the platform.

This measure also draws on the appeal of traditional internet forums, where users can find answers through public discussions. Game communities may thus attract strategy content, developers can reach more people through technical advice, and content creators may also attract new audiences without relying entirely on tools within Discord.

Starting from November 16th, each discoverable server will have its own webpage, which may display automatic summaries of discussions from active public channels. From mid-December onwards, some messages from public channels may also appear in search engine results.

Server administrators can choose which channels to include in this feature, while individual members can opt out to prevent their messages from being publicly searchable. Published messages will not display the username or profile picture. Private servers, private messages, and group private messages are not within the scope of this feature.

This announcement has triggered a backlash regarding privacy concerns. Some users are worried that their conversations may be exposed to an audience far beyond the original context; they believe that speaking on the Discord server does not necessarily mean that users wish for their messages to be searchable across the broader internet.

Others are concerned whether these conversations will be used to train the AI model. Similar controversies have also arisen in the data sharing practices of Reddit and the training disputes of AI, where users questioned whether their posts and comments should be used for training AI without explicit consent or compensation.

Discord indicates that users can manage their preferences in the settings, and server administrators also retain the control to decide which channels will have access to this feature. It is worth noting that due to legal restrictions, this feature is disabled by default in the European Union, the United Kingdom, Canada, Brazil, Australia, and South Korea. Teenage users are also excluded from this feature.
