North Korea denies involvement in the $6.3 billion hacker attack on cryptocurrency exchange Binance, calling the allegations another attempt by the United States to damage Pyongyang's image. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Secret Service, and cybersecurity analysts, however, claim that this attack, described as the largest in history, was orchestrated by a group associated with North Korea. Binance stated that since resuming trading on Sunday, the exchange has experienced a net outflow of $4.72 billion and claimed that it will bear all losses related to this attack, having already recovered about 95% of the stolen assets.

North Korea denies being behind the record $6.3 billion (£4.7 billion) hacker attack on the cryptocurrency exchange Binance (Binance), calling the allegations "absurd remarks."

Kim Yu-jong, the sister of Kim Jong-un, a senior official and leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, stated on Tuesday that these accusations are another "malicious attempt" by the United States to damage Pyongyang's public image.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Secret Service, and cybersecurity analysts stated that this attack was orchestrated by North Korea, calling it the largest cyberattack in history.

Blockchain analysts and FBI indicate that this attack was led by the state-backed hacker group TraderTraitor.

FBI has called on industry partners to assist in intercepting transactions from cryptocurrency accounts associated with this organization.

Kim said in a statement, "The United States once again uses clichéd provocation to link this incident with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea."

However, in recent years, Pyongyang has been implicated in several major cyberattacks, allegations that North Korea has consistently denied.

TraderTraitor is also known as Lazarus Group. This organization has been implicated in the record-breaking $1.5 billion hacker attack on the cryptocurrency exchange Bybit in 2025.

Research institutions such as the Nanyang Technological University's Laya Le Nan International Research Institute in Singapore have stated that Pyongyang systematically builds its cyber capabilities, recruiting talented students from universities and sending them to hacker departments supervised by North Korean intelligence agencies.

North Korea has consistently denied such claims.

Kim Jong-un stated, "Resolutely opposing all kinds of malicious activities in cyberspace is the consistent policy stance of the Government of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea."

Binance has not responded to inquiries regarding BBC being implicated in this hacking attack.

Since the incident occurred, this cryptocurrency giant's public statements have mainly focused on the technical nature of this vulnerability and the countermeasures taken to protect users.

A spokesperson for the company stated that since trading resumed on Sunday, a net amount of $4.72 billion has been withdrawn from the exchange.

The spokesperson told BBC on Tuesday that this net outflow only constitutes "a relatively limited portion" of Binance's total assets, which are approximately $157 billion.

She stated that this figure reflects the combined impact of hacker attacks, subsequent withdrawals, and changes in market prices.

She added, "The level of withdrawals is gradually stabilizing to what we consider to be a normal and expected state of on-chain activity."

The company stated last week that preliminary checks indicated that a engineer's laptop had been compromised, allowing the attacker to make unauthorized withdrawals.

After Binance cooperated with the relevant issuers to freeze the assets affected by this hacker attack, the main cryptocurrency trading on the platform has resumed.

The company has repeatedly stated that it will bear all losses related to this attack and claimed that it has already recovered approximately 95% of the stolen assets in this incident.
