IMF Forces El Salvador to Stop Buying Bitcoin
2026-10-09 01:22:17
According to CoinMeta, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) forced El Salvador to stop its Bitcoin purchases. After approving a $138 million funding grant to El Salvador, the IMF granted El Salvador an exemption from its Bitcoin accumulation restrictions. The IMF also required the government to provide greater transparency regarding Bitcoin holdings in order to reduce the country's involvement in Bitcoin-related activities. In the future, there is no longer any expectation of the government further accumulating Bitcoin, except for the already recorded donations, which effectively ended El Salvador's sovereign Bitcoin purchase program.
