Shopify restricts autonomous trading during the checkout process
2026-10-09 03:40:24
According to CoinMeta, Shopify has updated its storefronts's robots.txt policy, explicitly prohibiting autonomous agents from completing purchases. Starting from July 15, 2025, checkout processes will be limited to human users only, with automatic checkout, payment, and order placement being prohibited. This policy applies to individual merchants storefronts and not to shopify.com corporate websites. Although Shopify President Harry Finkestein stated during the first-quarter 2026 financial report conference call that "artificial intelligence is now the mother tongue of Shopify," this policy sets clear boundaries for such integration. The policy creates a functional divide between AI and commerce, ensuring that AI-driven research remains feasible, but checkout and/or cart pathways are now restricted. The main driving factor behind this policy is the lack of a robust framework for handling agent-induced financial errors. According to PYMTS smart data from September 2026, 93% of merchants believe that AI providers should bear the financial losses resulting from agent errors. Currently, the payment infrastructure lacks standardized cause codes for "agent errors," leading to significant gaps in corporate responsibility.
