Top Cryptographers Warn: AI Could Undermine the Mathematical Foundations of Encrypted Wallets
2026-10-09 20:22:45
According to CoinMeta, top cryptographer Matthew Green warns that artificial intelligence may pose an unexpected threat to the mathematical foundations that protect Bitcoin and Ethereum. Researchers are concerned that AI might discover a shortcut that would allow hackers to crack the encryption and digital signatures that safeguard the internet and cryptocurrencies. This concern stems from OpenAI's announcement on October 6th that its unpublished AI model had generated 722 mathematical manuscripts covering 372 result sets, attempting about 4000 unsolved problems. Green stated that if AI finds a faster solution, attackers could potentially recover private keys and steal funds, especially since the public keys of Bitcoin wallets would be particularly vulnerable. Although there has not yet been a publicly demonstrated AI attack that can crack the core encryption of Bitcoin or Ethereum, whether the industry can quickly upgrade its security to address this potential threat remains a question.
