As reported by Nikkei Asia, Apple has asked suppliers to reduce component production in October, with some orders decreased by 15% to 20%. As a result, Apple's stock price fell by about 1.9% during early trading on Friday. This situation highlights one consequence of the AI boom: the same data center spending that drives semiconductor profits is also making consumer electronics more expensive. The starting prices for iPhone and Pro are $1,199 and $1,299 respectively, which is $100 more expensive than their predecessors, partly due to rising memory and storage costs. It is estimated that the cost of components for iPhone may increase by about 38%, with memory accounting for a larger proportion of device material costs, from 10% to 34%. These reports have raised doubts about whether Apple's high-end pricing strategy can withstand ongoing component inflation.
