According to CoinMeta, six of the world's most powerful AI companies promised last week to the White House that they would allow external personnel to inspect their operations. On September 29th, Nvidia, OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, and xAI signed an agreement to cooperate with independent external auditors or evaluators and to have independent board members review the audit reports to ensure that issues are addressed. However, the agreement does not specify who selects the auditors, what the auditors can inspect, or whether any findings will be made public, nor does it impose penalties for ignoring audits. Each company can choose its own auditors and decide what information the auditors may view.
