OCC releases final GENIUS legislation rules: rewards are allowed but no guarantees are provided
2026-10-21 21:10:15
According to CoinMeta, the US Monetary Supervision Agency (OCC) released its first comprehensive regulatory framework on Wednesday, allowing certain stablecoins to offer rewards, although such rewards are not guaranteed. The new framework also eliminates the assumption that rewarding certain affiliated and third-party stablecoins violates laws that prohibit issuers from paying interest. These rules will come into effect on January 18, 2027, and it is stated that each reward arrangement will be evaluated based on its economic viability. Despite opposition from the industry, the final regulations do take into account some of the industry's concerns by removing that assumption, although prohibitive provisions still remain in place. It is also noted that existing projects do not need to shut down before the new law takes effect, and not every project is required to have formal approval.
