$5 trillion AI Data Center Prosperity Faces Pressure on Investor Returns

According to CoinMeta, with the prosperity of the AI data centers, it is estimated that by 2030, the global demand for AI computing will require investments of $520 billion. However, investors' concerns about returns are growing, with main reasons including rising debt, power shortages, and uncertain returns. Building modern AI facilities requires not only expensive processors but also significant investments in land, electricity, cooling systems, and network construction, among other things. Most of these costs are incurred before customers generate substantial revenue, which makes the financing gap particularly dangerous in the event of construction delays. While companies like Microsoft, Amazon, and Google can make large-scale investments using cash from their mature businesses, smaller infrastructure operators need to borrow frequently. JP Morgan estimates that about $2 trillion in infrastructure expansion may ultimately be financed through the investment-grade credit market.
