Google is further integrating AI image generation capabilities into its office software. The newly launched Google Pics will be incorporated into Google Workspace and will be available to corporate customers, as well as paid subscription users of Google AI Pro and Ultra. This product focuses on "generating content using prompts," rather than the manual formatting and drawing found in traditional design software.
First batch to integrate with Docs and Slides
According to Google, Google Pics will be gradually rolled out to most Workspace customers in the coming weeks, while also covering paid Google AI subscription users. The product has already begun to be integrated with Docs and Slides, and will subsequently be extended to Google Drive.
This means that Google is directly integrating image generation and editing capabilities into everyday office processes. Users can create the images they need within documents and presentations without having to switch to separate design platforms.
Focusing on generation rather than a template market
Unlike Canva, Google Pics does not emphasize a marketplace for templates, materials, and creators. The report mentions that Canva allows artists, illustrators, and photographers to upload templates, images, and other content, and they can earn a commission through the platform; whereas Google Pics places more emphasis on images being directly generated by AI.
It also differs in its purpose compared to Adobe Express. The latter is often used by creators for actual design and production, whereas Google Pics is more like a tool that facilitates creation based on prompts, with a focus on generation rather than starting from scratch with detailed design.
Supports object editing and collaborative modification.
In addition to generating images, Google Pics also provides a number of editing functions, including individually selecting and adjusting objects within the image, modifying or translating text within the image, etc. The system also supports collaborative editing and allows for the generation of multiple versions at once for users to choose from.
From the product layout perspective, Google aims to integrate the design capabilities of AI with its existing office suite, further expanding the scope of use for Workspace in corporate scenarios. For users, the value of such tools lies mainly in reducing the time required to create images and lowering the barriers to producing basic visual content.
