Matthews Asia Portfolio Manager Andrew Mattock stated that investors looking to increase their exposure to artificial intelligence should pay attention to China, as the effects of broad emerging market strategies may not be as good. He mentioned that when buying emerging market funds or ordinary MSCI products, investors do not obtain much exposure related to China AI.

Matthews Asia Portfolio Manager Andrew Mattock indicates that investors who wish to increase their exposure to artificial intelligence should turn their attention to China.

He said that investors need to adopt more targeted approaches, as a broad strategy for emerging markets will not be as effective.

"Investors need to realize that when they buy funds in emerging markets, or ordinary MSCI products... what they get in return is not much," Mattock said this week on the "ETF Edge" program on CNBC. "The most important part that they are missing... is that of China."

He pointed out that companies from South Korea and Taiwan account for nearly half of the weight in the iShares MSCI emerging markets ETF ( EEM ), while iShares MSCI China ETF ( MCHI ) do not focus on AI stocks.

The fund managed by Mattock is Matthews China Fund ( MCHFX ). According to the company's website, this fund invests at least 80% of its net assets in common stocks and preferred stocks of companies established in China.

As of the close on Friday, this fund has declined by 4% so far this year. Its largest positions include Tencent and Alibaba.

Reviewing the view of Tepper to buy "everything in China"

There seems to be a clear change in investing in China.

Billionaire hedge fund manager, founder of Appaloosa Management, David Tepper, is once again optimistic about the world's second-largest economy – in September 2024, he told CNBC that he had increased his positions in “everything related to China.”

However, Brendan Ahern of KraneShares suggests that investors consider some strategies to help themselves withstand the significant fluctuations in the Chinese market.

"I like to use options around these ETF, such as KWEB [ KraneShares CSI China Internet ETF ]," the company's chief investment officer stated in the same interview.

“Why do some hedge funds prefer these ETF? Because they can sell call options and, in principle, protect themselves,” he added, “leaving themselves some downside protection.”

According to the data from FactSet, the top two positions held by KraneShares CSI China Internet ETF are the same as those of Matthews China Fund: Tencent and Alibaba. However, as of the close on Friday, this fund has declined by more than 27% so far this year.

US tokenized stocks gain access to a conditional trial channel: public chains are available, but it's not a 'full migration of US stocks to the blockchain'
Tokenized stocks are moving from conceptual demonstrations to more concrete regulatory trials. On September 17, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) issued a temporary and conditional “Innovation Exemption” order, providing limited exchange-defined exemptions for certain types of tokenized securities trading venues, as well as limited dealer-defined exemptions for eligible liquidity providers. The Solana ecosystem recently discussed this order again, suggesting that public chain infrastructure could become a suitable platform for such transactions. However, the most misleading aspect is also here: regulatory approval does not mean that all stock tokens or all on-chain platforms are now allowed, nor does it signify that the U.S. stock market has fully moved to blockchain.

August security check passenger flow at Canada's eight major airports increased by 6.1%, but flights to the US have recovered yet have not returned to pre-pandemic levels
Air Canada travel seems quite bustling at the end of summer. According to statistics released by Statistics Canada on September 25th, in August 2026, there were approximately 6.1 million passengers undergoing pre-flight security checks at eight major airports, representing a year-on-year increase of 6.1%. Of this, about 3 million passengers traveled on domestic routes, around 1.4 million on cross-border flights to the United States, and about 1.7 million on other international routes. What is more noteworthy is that the number of passengers undergoing security checks for flights to the U.S. has seen a rebound for the first time after 18 consecutive months of decline, with an increase of 5.9%. However, if we extend the time frame to August 2024, this portion of passenger traffic is still 5.9% lower. The so-called "rebound" is not yet considered a "full recovery."

Canadian tourism spending increased slightly by 0.3% in the second quarter; international visitors were the real drivers of growth
Canada's tourism industry delivered a seemingly stable report card in the second quarter, but with uneven performance internally. According to national tourism indicators released by Statistics Canada on September 25th, tourism spending for that quarter amounted to 28.5 billion Canadian dollars, representing a 0.3% increase from the previous quarter. Domestic residents' spending on tourism within the country remained at 21.2 billion Canadian dollars, with almost no change; while spending by non-resident tourists amounted to 7.3 billion Canadian dollars, showing a 1.0% growth. At first glance at the total amount, one might think that consumption has fully recovered; however, upon examining the sources of this growth, it is actually foreign visitors who have contributed to this marginal increase.
