IT noticed that the patent drawings show a low, two-door coupe equipped with an active rear aerodynamic package; when the spoiler is retracted, it can be completely flush with the top of the trunk lid.

Ordinary fixed spoilers are only used to direct airflow and reduce turbulence, whereas this device belongs to the inverted airfoil tail fin category and is capable of actually generating downward pressure.

According to the patent diagram, the tail fin includes a main upper wing surface, and a movable slat is also integrated at the leading edge. The entire tail fin is driven by a multi-segment hinge connecting rod mechanism, allowing it to switch between various operating modes:

• Flat storage mode: The tail fin is completely level with the surface of the vehicle body. This maintains a smooth appearance during normal cruising, while also reducing wind resistance.
• Downforce mode: The tail fin extends upward and tilts sharply to cut into the airflow, creating a strong downward force above the rear wheels; this enhances tire grip during sharp turns and emergency braking.
• Drag reduction mode: The tail fins are rotated to a flat position to smooth the airflow; by sacrificing some downforce, straight-line acceleration performance and a higher top speed are achieved.
• Predictive collision avoidance with automatic retraction: This spoiler is linked to Tesla's driving assistance suite and external vehicle sensors. Once the system detects an unavoidable collision, the spoiler will quickly fold inward to reduce the risk of damage to external components and minimize body damage.

Previously, Tesla also applied for a patent for ground effect fans that were once banned by the F1 competition. These fans are used to press the entire vehicle chassis down tightly against the road surface.
