Researchers from the Ethereum Foundation, Toni Wahrst and tter, recently posted on platform X that the upgrades of Glamsterdam and EIP-7928 (block-level access lists, Block - Level Access Lists) are progressing well and are now nearing the final sprint stage.
As the developer network testing continues to progress, the countdown for the first public test of Glamsterdam has begun. The Sepolia fork plan is scheduled for October 6, 2026, with the mainnet expected to go live in the fourth quarter of 2026, although the official date has not yet been announced.
Wahrst and tter believe that Glamsterdam will be one of the largest forks to date; although the development process will take a relatively long time, he claims that the end result will be worth it.
The upcoming Glamsterdam upgrade is aimed at paving the way for the next generation of expansion.
Glamsterdam Upgrade focuses on three main goals: improving processing speed (parallelization), expanding capacity, and preventing database bloat (sustainability).
ePBS is one of the core highlights in the upgrade of Glamsterdam; it will restructure the block verification process and reduce trust assumptions. At the same time, BALs will introduce parallelization capabilities to Ethereum.
Ethereum co-founder reveals vision after the Hegota hard fork
In a recent post, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin shared some of his visions for the Ethereum era following Hegota.
Buterin wrote on X: "I tried to express in a relatively concise way the true meaning of almost everything that is planned to happen to Ethereum starting from the fork after Hegota. It is no longer just a blockchain. It will become a hybrid architecture that combines blockchain with modern cryptography, thereby enabling more powerful features."
Buterin mentioned Strawman — which includes a draft longer-term roadmap for Ethereum — and stated that the Hegota fork planned for next year is likely to be Ethereum's last “regular” fork, that is, a fork that will still feature functionalities and technologies recognizable by people from 2015.
According to Buterin, all content after Hegota will involve recursive STARK, automated formal verification, and highly optimized consensus algorithms in order to endow Ethereum with quantum resistance. He also stated that with the introduction of PeerDAS, Ethereum has begun to transition from "just a blockchain" to a more powerful form, and starting from Hegota, this transformation will become the core narrative of Ethereum.
Buterin indicates that the result of this transformation will be a computing power that is cheaper, more scalable, offers higher privacy, and has a higher level of security than what could be achieved with the technology of the previous era alone – namely, a 'cryptographic world computer'.
