Retail giant Walmart (WMT) saw its stock price remain flat today, following the company's involvement in a barbecue brush recall incident. After the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall, these products were identified as potentially causing serious internal injuries if users accidentally ingested the bristles, which might even require surgical treatment.
This recall involves multiple Walmart Expert Grill metal wire barbecue brushes. The recall notice states that a total of five types of barbecue brushes are included in the recall, as the wire fiber bristles may fall off and adhere to the food being cooked or the grill rack. This recall notice covers 4.4 million units of product.
Surgery may be required.
If the bristles are accidentally ingested, it is believed that they may cause internal injuries, and in some cases, surgery may be required to remove them. The barbecue brushes in question come with either black plastic or stainless steel handles. Walmart stated that some products also came with metal scrapers. These products were sold at Walmart and online from January 2021 to August 2026, including Walmart.com, with prices ranging from $1 to $28. Walmart advises consumers to immediately stop using the recalled barbecue brushes.
This is not the first time in recent months that Walmart has encountered a safety issue related to cooking. Last summer, Walmart was involved in a nationwide product recall involving thousands of gas grills due to a risk of explosion, which could have caused serious cuts to customers.
Recently, the retailer also faced a food recall incident, which included Utz ( UTZ ) chips, as well as Listeria risks associated with ready-to-eat chicken meals and celery strips.
Risks to reputation

During a period when consumers are cautious, although these incidents are not directly caused by products manufactured by Walmart, they may damage the brand's reputation. This is also why companies and investors need to take the key risk of "sales capability" seriously.
