IT News on October 5th: According to a report by South Korean media ddaily, on October 2nd, TSMC announced that in addition to the previously decided 10% to 20% price increase, it plans to raise the shipping prices for its most advanced wafers by another 6% to 8% in the first quarter of 2027, due to rising manufacturing costs and electricity expenses.
Reports citing semiconductor industry sources state that TSMC's orders for 2-nanometer manufacturing processes have surged, and the company has raised its wafer order targets by 15% to 20% from the original plan.
To cope with the increase in orders, TSMC has brought five 2-nanometer dedicated mass production factories located in Baoshan, Hsinchu, Kaohsiung, and other areas into full operational mode. The concentration of advanced process capacity has also made it difficult for some customers to obtain additional wafer quotas.
Chip design companies such as Qualcomm ( Qualcomm ) and AMD are facing rising manufacturing costs and the risk of relying on a single supply chain. As a result, some customers have begun to seek alternative suppliers other than TSMC, providing Samsung Electronics' foundry business with potential order opportunities.
Samsung is advancing its 2nd-generation 2-nanometer process SF2P, with the goal of increasing the yield rate to over 70%. If the stability of this process's yield rate is verified, Samsung's foundry services are expected to take on advanced process orders that will be diverted due to TSMC's price increases and capacity constraints.
