Russian internet giant Yandex suspended operations at one of its key data centers on Thursday following a drone attack, due to Ukraine's continued targeting of Russian infrastructure.
Yandex stated in a declaration sent to CNBC that the attack caused a fire at its data center located in Sazovo, Ryazan Oblast in western Russia, and affected some of the company's infrastructure. The data center has completely ceased operations, and some Yandex services may no longer be available to users.
Yandex indicates: 'There are no casualties, and emergency services personnel are on site to handle the subsequent impacts.'
Headquartered in Moscow, Yandex is known as "Google of Russia" and provides the most widely used search engine in the country. The company has also developed the region's leading generative AI model, YandexGPT.
Although Ukraine has not yet claimed responsibility for the attack on Yandex, in recent months, Ukraine has been intensifying its attacks on Russian infrastructure, including energy facilities such as Russian refineries. Ukrainian President Zelensky stated that these refineries are used to "fund the war and the killing of Ukrainians."
Ukraine has also intensified its attacks on the Russian retail giant Wildberries, which is an important component of the consumer infrastructure.
Last week, Zelenskyy stated that in response to Moscow's new air raid policy, Ukraine will intensify its strikes on Russian refineries. Moscow's policy aims to force the residents of Kiev and other cities to leave.
