EU lawmakers push to include crypto assets in the anti-corruption agenda

European Parliament members also called for enhanced efforts in asset recovery, while the European Commission plans to adopt its first anti-corruption strategy by the end of this year.

Legislators are urging the European Commission to address corruption risks related to crypto assets, opaque ownership structures, and digital tools in its upcoming anti-corruption strategy.

European Parliament members ( MEPs ) also called for increased efforts in tracking, freezing, confiscating, and recovering criminal proceeds on Thursday.

The European Parliament passed a non-binding resolution on Thursday, outlining its priorities for the European Commission's anti-corruption strategy.

The strategy is aimed at complementing the EU Anti-Corruption Directive. This directive came into effect in May and has unified the definition of corruption crimes and the minimum penalties across the EU.

In addition to asset recovery, members of the European Parliament also call for stricter rules regarding public procurement and funding allocations, more unified standards for conflicts of interest, clear lobbying regulations, and common rules for political financing. They also urge for enhanced protection of whistleblowers and investigative journalists.

The European Commission plans to adopt its anti-corruption strategy by the end of 2026.
