On October 9th, Tianyang Technology (300872. SZ) released a news item regarding the procurement of NVIDIA GPU, which attracted widespread attention from the market. The company stated that it recently signed a GPU procurement agreement with Company X, to purchase 20,000 units of NVIDIA RTX PRO at 5500 Blackwell each. Tianyang Technology's closing stock price rose by 12.38%.

From NVIDIA's introduction to this product, it seems that the RTX PRO 5500 Blackwell is not the chip commonly considered suitable for large-scale AI training and inference in data centers, but rather a workstation product. However, the cost of this GPU purchase is still likely to exceed 1 billion yuan.

Not a data center AI training chip

NVIDIA updated the information for the “RTX PRO 5500 Blackwell workstation version” on its official website in September, but it is still listed as “coming soon,” which means it has not yet been officially released to the market.

The RTX PRO series is a product launched by NVIDIA for professional-level AI, graphics technology, rendering, and computational workloads. According to the introduction, the RTX PRO 5500 Blackwell workstation version is designed for professionals in the fields of media and entertainment, architecture and engineering, manufacturing, higher education, financial services, earth sciences, and healthcare. It is suitable for generative AI, physical AI applications, AI-driven rendering and graphics, scientific computing and data analysis, video content, and streaming media workloads. This product is equipped with 84GB of high-speed GDDR7 memory.

Although it is also capable of running the AI workload, there is still a significant difference between the RTX PRO 5500 Blackwell workstation version and the GPU commonly used in AI data centers. NVIDIA has clearly stated that this is a professional desktop graphics card designed to support large language model inference and proxy functions using desktop drivers. In terms of memory bandwidth, which affects the performance of AI, the RTX PRO 5500 Blackwell has a memory bandwidth of 1395GB per second, whereas the data center product H100 boasts a memory bandwidth of 3TB per GPU.

Previously, NVIDIA launched the RTX PRO 6000 and Blackwell in two versions: workstation and server. As of now, there is still no introduction to a server version for the RTX PRO 5500 and Blackwell.

Even though it has not yet been launched on the market, there is still interest in the price of this product. Referring to products that are already on the market, reporters observed that on e-commerce platforms, merchants are pricing the 72GB RTX PRO at 5000 Blackwell and the 96GB RTX PRO at 6000 Blackwell workstation versions at around 61,000 to 77,000 yuan and 123,000 to 146,000 yuan respectively. Additionally, the pre-sale page for the RTX PRO at 5500 Blackwell shows a price of 89,999 yuan.

The memory capacity of RTX PRO falls between that of the two aforementioned products, so it is estimated that the price may range from 80,000 to 120,000 yuan. This also means that the amount spent by Tianyang Technology on this purchase could be between 1.6 billion and 2.4 billion yuan.

Who is Tianyang Technology?

Which company is Tianyang Technology that has made this purchase of NVIDIA computing power?

According to the company, its main clients in the downstream sector are financial industry players, primarily banks. The company utilizes technologies such as AI and blockchain to provide consulting services, as well as financial technology products and solutions to its clients. In addition to its core business, Tianyang Technology has also positioned computing power leasing and other computing-related services as a second growth strategy, offering long-term computing power solutions to leading internet ecosystems and manufacturers of general-purpose large models.

Since the beginning of this year, Tianyang Technology has announced several collaborations related to computing power.

In May, Tianyang Technology announced that Qimingxing Han had signed a "Computing Platform Service Agreement" with end customers. Tianyang Technology will be responsible for providing all the funding required for equipment procurement for the project and will receive the agreed-upon benefits and equity rights according to the agreement. Qimingxing Han will mainly be in charge of computing power procurement and leasing services, with a procurement investment amount of 3.5 billion to 4 billion yuan.

In June, Tianyang Technology announced another partnership with Capital Online to establish a joint venture for computing power leasing services, with Tianyang Technology contributing 70 million yuan. Subsequently, the company signed a computing power cloud service agreement with Yunli Smart, totaling 402 million yuan in value.

Purchasing 20,000 NVIDIA RTX PRO with a price of 5,500 Blackwell is it for financial services or for computing power leasing services? What is the purpose of this purchase? Is this computing power acquisition related to the aforementioned computing power collaboration? Why has the company only released a message without making an official announcement? Regarding these questions, a reporter from Yicai called the securities affairs representative of Tianyang Technology as an investor. The relevant person in charge stated that it still needs to be confirmed internally and mentioned that if the related matters meet the disclosure criteria, they will be announced according to the relevant regulations.

From a fundamental perspective, some of Tianyang Technology's financial indicators are not very optimistic.

Tianyang Technology's revenue last year increased by 0.6% year-on-year to 1.777 billion yuan, but its net profit turned from profit to loss, with a loss of 138 million yuan. The company stated that the reasons for the loss include intensified market competition, increased difficulty in project management, business transformation, and the impact of personnel structure optimization, among others.

In the first half of this year, Tianyang Technology reported revenue of 964 million yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 3.29%, and net profit of 60.0171 million yuan, a year-on-year increase of 17.59%. Although net profit increased, the non-recurring items excluded net profit was in deficit by 6.93 million yuan, turning from a profit to a loss year-on-year, and the net cash flow generated from operating activities was negative. As of the end of June this year, Tianyang Technology had 508 million yuan in monetary funds, which is a 55% decrease compared to the end of last year.
