London, October 19, 2026 / PRNewswire / -- The global payment infrastructure platform Mercuryo and the community-driven blockchain ecosystem BNB Chain have jointly released a report that highlights the diverse uses of stablecoins. The report states that stablecoins can be used for both small remittances and for large transactions of digital assets by "crypto whales" in the capital markets.
Research findings indicate that in the third quarter of 2026, on BNB Chain, 77.4% of stablecoin transactions were for amounts less than $100, while transactions of $10,000 or more accounted for 66.2% of the total transaction value.
Titled "Stablecoins on BNB Chain: From fiat currency to cryptocurrencies, and back to fiat currencyThe report, combining the fiat-to-cryptocurrency and cryptocurrency-to-fiat transaction data of Mercuryo for the third quarter of 2026, as well as the on-chain data of BNB Chain, provides complementary insights into how stablecoins flow. The report states that the research findings demonstrate the versatility and usability of stablecoins, and how they serve a wide range of purposes on the same permissionless blockchain infrastructure.
Daily transfers and large-scale capital flows
The report indicates that the current market serves multiple purposes simultaneously. Stablecoins remain an important component of the digital asset market, but data also shows a pattern consistent with their increasingly significant role in daily stablecoin payments, such as cross-border remittances. Most on-chain transfers are of smaller amounts, and stablecoins are often used for conversions between local currencies and digital dollars.
The median network fee for the last stablecoin transfer on BNB Chain was only 0.0068 US dollars. The report states that low costs are important for both individuals sending remittances and institutions settling high-value payments. These data collectively indicate that the same blockchain infrastructure can handle both frequent, small-value transactions and support large-scale capital flows.
Mercuryo Chief Commercial Officer Arthur Firstov stated: "The research conducted by Mercuryo and BNB Chain reveals one of the most representative features of stablecoins, which is their versatility. The same permissionless blockchain infrastructure that supports small transactions and cross-border payments also underpins large-scale transactions and liquidity in the capital market. Stablecoins were initially designed as a tool to store value between transactions for those who held Bitcoin positions. Today, as the efficiency of blockchain technology improves and costs decrease, benefiting the general public, we see these tokens being used for a variety of different purposes."
Local currency and familiar payment methods
The report found that in the third quarter of 2026, 70% of the payment value for purchasing US-dollar-denominated stablecoins on BNB Chain through Mercuryo came from non-US dollar currencies. The United States accounted for only 9.8% of the purchase value, with Asia being the largest regional market at 39.3%, followed by Europe at 33.4%.
Payment preferences are also similar to mainstream online shopping behaviors. The report indicates that on-chain activities reflect daily shopping patterns: among stablecoin purchases made through Mercuryo, Apple Pay and Google Pay together account for 69.5% of the total number of purchases and 57.7% of the total purchase value. This combined purchase proportion has increased from 42.3% in the third quarter of 2025; among purchases with device records, 87.2% were completed via mobile phones.
The Worldpay 's '2026 Global Payments Report' shows that in 2025, digital wallets accounted for 56% of the total value of global e-commerce transactions. The report states that this comparison indicates that stablecoin purchases are increasingly compatible with the online checkout experience that consumers are already familiar with, and no longer require each user to adopt a specialized encrypted payment method.
Self-hosting dominates
The report indicates that in all aspects of stablecoin usage examined, self-hosted wallets hold a dominant position. Of the value spent on purchasing stablecoins through Mercuryo, 59.5% flows into self-hosted wallet channels; across the entire BNB Chain, individual addresses hold 63.3% of the total value of stablecoins; and among the value withdrawn through Mercuryo, 59.8% comes from self-hosted wallet channels.
Although these datasets measure wallet activity in different ways, the research results indicate that self-hosted wallets remain very important for acquiring and managing stablecoins. Such wallets allow users to directly hold and transfer assets, while also providing access to a variety of applications and services within the on-chain ecosystem.
Stablecoins are in active circulation.
The report also found that 64.3% of the value of BNB Chain stablecoins was transferred within the previous 30 days, indicating that a considerable portion of this value is in active circulation. The report states that this finding highlights the dual role of stablecoins: they facilitate value transfer and also continue to support transactions, decentralized finance (DeFi), and a broader range of on-chain activities.
The report states that, overall, these findings indicate that stablecoins are not merely digital tokens stored on blockchain. They have become part of a broader financial lifecycle, connecting fiat currencies, self-managed wallets, on-chain applications, and traditional payment infrastructure to serve a wider range of financial needs than just transactions.
The transfer fee for stablecoins on BNB Chain is 0.0068 US dollars. Additional fees may be incurred when purchasing, selling, or exchanging for stablecoins.
Stablecoins carry risks, including potential value loss, risks associated with the issuer and redemption processes, as well as risks related to the underlying blockchain. They are not equivalent to bank deposits or cash and are not covered by deposit protection schemes.
